(FRANKFORT, Ky.) — Kentucky law enforcement agencies are ramping up patrols for impaired drivers as part of a nationwide crackdown that begins Tuesday and continues through the holiday season.
The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, running from Dec. 10 through Jan. 1, comes as December drunk driving fatalities have reached a 15-year high nationally, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Gov. Andy Beshear emphasized the importance of responsible choices during holiday celebrations.
“As we get ready to celebrate Christmas with family and friends, let’s do everything we can to keep our neighbors safe,” Beshear said. “Make the choice to drive sober or plan ahead to protect both yourself and our neighbors.”
The enhanced enforcement period targets one of the deadliest times on Kentucky roads. State data shows 448 impaired driving-related crashes occurred during Christmas and New Year’s holidays over the past five years, resulting in 192 injuries and 13 deaths.
Transportation Cabinet Secretary Jim Gray said those tragedies were entirely preventable.
“There’s no shortage of options to stay safe, like designating a sober driver, calling a rideshare, or finding another safe ride,” Gray said. “Protect yourself, your passengers, and everyone sharing the road this holiday season.”
NHTSA warns that impairment begins with the first drink. At a blood alcohol concentration of just 0.02 — well below the legal limit — visual functions and multitasking abilities start to decline.
State officials recommend planning safe transportation before attending holiday gatherings, using rideshare services or taxis if impaired, and wearing seat belts. Drivers who spot impaired motorists should pull over safely and call Kentucky State Police at 800-222-5555 or dial 911.
The campaign is funded by NHTSA and coordinated through state highway safety offices nationwide.
