Red Cross Appeals for Blood Donors During Holiday Season

(Murray, Ky.) — The American Red Cross is issuing an urgent call for blood and platelet donors this December as hospitals prepare for increased demand during the busy holiday season.

According to the organization, certain blood types are in particularly short supply. Types O positive, O negative, and B negative donors are especially needed in the coming weeks to maintain adequate inventory levels at medical facilities.

“When the unexpected happens, it’s the blood products already on the shelves that matter,” Red Cross officials stated in their appeal.

Incentives Offered

To encourage donations during National Month of Giving, the Red Cross is offering incentives to donors. Those who donate between December 8-18 will receive a $15 Amazon gift card via email. Donors who give between December 19 and January 4, 2026, will receive an exclusive Red Cross long-sleeved T-shirt while supplies last.

Local Donation Opportunities

Dozens of blood drives are scheduled throughout western Kentucky this month. Local venues include churches, schools, community centers, and the Paducah Blood Donation Center at 4635 Falconcrest Drive, which maintains an extensive schedule throughout December.

Murray residents can donate at several locations, including First Presbyterian Church on December 12, Murray First United Methodist Church on December 21, and St. John’s Episcopal Church on December 31.

Eligibility and Registration

Most individuals age 17 or older (16 with parental consent in some states), weighing at least 110 pounds and in generally good health, are eligible to donate. Donors are encouraged to schedule appointments through the Red Cross Blood Donor App, at RedCrossBlood.org, or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS.

The organization also recommends using RapidPass to complete pre-donation paperwork online before arriving at a blood drive to expedite the process.

For those unable to donate blood, the Red Cross welcomes volunteers to serve as blood donor ambassadors or transportation specialists. Information about volunteer opportunities is available at redcross.org/volunteertoday.
