(MURRAY, Ky.) — A 37-year-old Murray woman faces felony charges after allegedly assaulting law enforcement during a welfare check that turned volatile Saturday morning.
Rebekah Poteet was arrested December 28 following an incident at a residence on Cambridge Drive, according to the Calloway County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to the home around 11:00 a.m. to conduct a welfare check. Upon arrival, authorities determined Poteet was intoxicated and called emergency medical services to the scene.
Poteet initially agreed to voluntary transport to the hospital, according to the sheriff’s office. However, the situation escalated as officers from the Calloway County Sheriff’s Office, Murray City Police, and Kentucky State Police attempted to escort her to the waiting ambulance.
Authorities say Poteet became agitated, threw items, and shouted slurs at responding officers. She then actively resisted, allegedly biting officers during the struggle. One law enforcement officer sustained a shoulder injury during the altercation.
Poteet was transported to Murray-Calloway County Hospital, where she was medically cleared before being taken to the Calloway County Detention Center.
She has been charged with third-degree assault of a police officer, a Class D felony, and resisting arrest.
