(TEHRAN)-For nearly four decades, a shadow has loomed over the Middle East, cast by a regime that traded the prosperity of its people for the export of terror. Today, that shadow has finally lifted. In a historic joint operation that has redefined the landscape of global security, the United States and Israel have successfully eliminated Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the upper echelons of the Iranian regime.
For many of us, this man was a constant fixture of evil, a figurehead of oppression who remained in power for our entire lives. His reign was defined not by the brilliance of the Iranian culture, but by the brutal suppression of his own citizens and a relentless campaign of violence against the West.
The cost of this regime’s malice has been paid in the blood of our bravest. We remember the thousands of U.S. service members and allies whose lives were cut short by Iranian-backed IEDs during Operation Iraqi Freedom. These were not just statistics; they were sons, daughters, brothers, sisters and my own cousin and his gunner—patriots who stood on the front lines of freedom and were met with cowards’ weapons funded by Tehran.
This is, to many of us, a settling of scores; it is also about the liberation of a wonderful and vibrant people. The Iranian people are a community of deep history, art, and humanity, held hostage for 47 years by a theocracy that feared their potential. Their celebrations in the streets following the news are a testament to a truth we have long known: the desire for freedom cannot be extinguished by any tyrant.
This was not a war of choice, but a necessary pursuit of peace. By removing the “head of the snake,” the U.S. and Israel have offered the world a rare gift—the chance for a more stable Middle East and a future where a great nation can finally rejoin the family of free countries.
The time had come. For our fallen, for our allies, and for the millions of Iranians who have prayed for this day: justice has been served, and the hour of freedom is at hand.
