(BENTON, Ky.) — The Marshall County Republican Committee will host a candidate forum on Monday, March 9, giving voters a chance to hear from those seeking the party’s nomination in the May 19 primary election.

Committee Chair Dwayne Stice said the event is modeled after a similar forum held in 2022 that drew a large crowd and positive feedback from the public. “The public appreciated hearing from each person what they hoped to accomplish in office,” Stice said.

All filed candidates have accepted invitations to participate, including contested races for Coroner, featuring Megan O’Bryan and Kenny Pratt; Commissioner of the First District, with Eddie McGuire and J.D. Morehead; Commissioner of the Second District, with Marty Barrett and Danny Cope; Jailer, with Patti Burton, Brian Cannon, Barry Howell, and Robert Johnson; and Sheriff, with Matt Hilbrecht and Doug Jordan.

Unopposed primary candidates have also been invited, including Monti Collins (Commissioner, Third District), Chrissy Greer (County Court Clerk), and Kevin Spraggs (Judge/Executive).

Each candidate will receive five minutes to speak, followed by written questions submitted by the audience. Stice said the forum reflects the committee’s commitment to openness. “Local elections are very important because these offices have the most effect on an individual’s life,” he said.

Republican Women to Meet, Honor Local Veterans

The Marshall County Republican Women will hold their monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 10, at 11:30 a.m. at Republican Headquarters on the Benton Court Square. The public is welcome, and a light lunch will be provided.

Sheriff candidate Doug Jordan will serve as guest speaker.

The meeting also highlights a new community initiative tied to the group’s “Focus on Community” theme — an effort to reestablish Marshall County as a Purple Heart County, a designation honoring communities committed to recognizing recipients of the nation’s oldest military decoration.

Bill Fletcher, a 24-year Army veteran, and Jerry Thompson, a Vietnam-era Marine Corps veteran, both former State Commanders for the Military Order of the Purple Heart, recently presented signs to the club in support of the effort. Six signs are expected to be placed along major roads and highways throughout the county in the near future, officially restoring the designation.
