(MURRAY, Ky.) — For the second consecutive year, the city of Murray has earned national recognition as one of the best small college towns in the United States. USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards ranked Murray third in the country among 20 nominated small college towns — one spot higher than its fourth-place finish in 2025.
USA Today highlighted Murray’s distinctive blend of academic energy and small-town character in its description of the city. “The worlds of Murray, Kentucky, and Murray State University have been intertwined since the college opened in 1922 in the heart of town,” the publication noted, pointing to local restaurants, outdoor outfitters, and parks featuring disc golf, a skate park, and a soccer complex as community draws. The outlet also spotlighted the Calloway County Quilt Trail, a regional attraction featuring more than 60 quilt patterns painted on barns, homes, and buildings throughout the surrounding countryside.
Murray State University President Dr. Ron K. Patterson called the ranking a reflection of the broader community’s character.
“Being recognized as one of the top three best small college towns in the country is a true reflection of what makes the city of Murray so special,” Patterson said. “There is a wonderful connection between Murray State University, the city of Murray, and the surrounding region we call home. This honor belongs to everyone who helps create a welcoming, vibrant environment.”
Erin Carrico, Executive Director of the Murray Convention and Visitors Bureau, echoed that sentiment, crediting residents, businesses, and the university alike for the honor.
“This recognition reflects the pride and support of our entire community,” Carrico said. “Together, we continue to showcase what makes Murray feel like home.”
Murray is home to Murray State University, a comprehensive institution founded in 1922 that offers 148 academic programs and enrolls nearly 10,000 students. The university has maintained a top-tier ranking from U.S. News & World Report for more than 30 consecutive years, competes in NCAA Division I athletics, and counts more than 80,000 alumni worldwide.
